Maintaining your pool in the offseason

A lot of folks think that you consistently maintain a pool in the summer, close it in the fall and then forget about in the winter. These people couldn’t be more wrong.

In many ways, minding your pool during the offseason months is just as important as any other time of year. Do things the right way – and you’re setting up your pool for success immediately once the warm weather months roll around again.

Here are some tips you can use to maintain your pool in the offseason months:

Protecting the water

Whenever the temperature drops, so does the rate of microorganism reproduction, but it doesn’t do so completely. You’ll still need to fight not only their growth, but also their ability to infiltrate your pool. Make sure you’re keeping up on your pool’s PH in the winter by using a winterization product that consists of algaecides that will time release over the course of the season.

Keep the cover clean

If you plan on using a cover all winter, it’s important to keep it clean. You can simply hose it down when detritus and other build up get on it. Doing so will help make sure your pool stays clean year-round and help you get off to a quick start once the weather warms up.

Adding chlorine

It’s a good idea to add chlorine before closing your pool, but it’s a bad idea to overdo it. If there’s too much chlorine in the water, you could end up accidentally bleaching your pool liner and trust us – it isn’t pretty. Most pool owners worry that they’re not adding enough chlorine before they close their pools and simply put – that’s just not the case. Be careful and measured and if you’re worried you put in way too little, you can always open your pool a little earlier and get a jump on the proverbial spring cleaning.

Consistently check above ground pool covers

If you own an above ground pool and have it covered, you need to constantly be checking in on it. Always check in on the safety cover cable as the cover could slip into the pool water if it gets loose. Also, make sure you have enough air in your air pillow. If the water level drops over the winter, then you’ll want to add more so that things like the walls, liner and cover aren’t damaged.
